A solo exhibition by Kailash Mani – 6pm – This exhibition explores the concept of “Outsider Art”. The term, coined by the British art historian Roger Cardinal, has its origins in Art Brut, or “raw art” introduced by the French artist Jean Dubuffet in 1945. Dubuffet used the term to describe art created by individuals existing outside the cultural mainstream, including psychiatric patients and those on the margins of society. Cardinal later broadened the definition to encompass artists working beyond formal art institutions and academic training. May 26 Lifelong Learning Payap presents Adventures in Acrylic Painting. Acrylic painting is one of the most versatile and playful mediums, allowing artists to work with both transparent and opaque layers, from delicate washes to bold palette knife techniques. This workshop welcomes students of all levels, offering tried and true methods alongside creative and unconventional tips. Instructor Amy Dapice guides participants step by step from drawing to finished paintings, combining solid instruction with inspiration and an enjoyable, hands-on experience. Lifelong Learning Payap presents Museums in Chiang Mai: Their Role in the Preservation and Communication of Natural and Cultural Heritage with Rebecca Weldon. This presentation explores the more than 100 museums in Chiang Mai that preserve and communicate Northern Thailand’s natural and cultural heritage, highlighting their development and support by communities, temples, and government. Discover historic buildings, archaeological sites, conservation efforts, and diverse collections ranging from temple art to ethnographic exhibits, including smaller niche museums and those created by universities and government agencies. The talk will also introduce a national museum database to enrich travel experiences in Thailand, and serves as the first in a museum series, with monthly excursions beginning in June. Lifelong Learning Payap presents From Snapshot to Masterpiece: The Art of Photography with Any Camera with Doug Mann. Learn how to create memorable photographs using any camera, including a phone, by understanding that the camera is simply a tool to craft an image. This session covers essential techniques such as composition and lighting, reinforced through discussion of example images featuring a variety of subjects including city streets, markets, landscapes, festivals, architecture, and more.
